Legal Ethics and Judge Sonia Sotomayor
His name is Robert Bowman. He overcame tribulation. He made his way through undergraduate school. He got accepted into law school. Finally, at age 47, he fulfilled his dream. He was awarded a Juris Doctorate; he studied hard and passed the notoriously difficult New York Bar Exam. He’s in, right? He is a member of the New York State Bar. No! He’s not! A New York appellate court, in a terse, one paragraph opinion, ruled that he lacked character, and he was therefore unfit for the profession.
Why? Because in his long academic career, he racked up over $400,000 in student loans and, here is the important part, had made no serious effort to repay the debt.
Curt and Mike discuss this interesting case with Cooley Law Professor Victoria Vuletich, an expert in legal ethics.
Scott Peterson has been on death row in California since 2002 for murdering his wife and unborn child. So what’s up with him? His family has created a web site asking for donations, so they can really, really begin investigating the case. (Let’s not rush into anything.)
And, of course, Curt and Mike discuss the (yawn) now completed confirmation hearings of Judge Sonia Sotomayor.
